Let me clear something up from the get-go, this is not a command in the context that I am using, it’s a LIFESTYLE.
I am sure that you have either heard of or watched the TV series of Spartacus. The series is a serialization of the story of Spartacus, the Thracian slave turned Gladiator who lead the slave rebellion against the Romans in circa 71 BC.
The series has met with critical acclaim and subsequently had a sequel and a “pre-qual” made .
Just prior to filming, Whitfield was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a form of blood cancer. The filming of the second series was put on hold for his expected recovery. Unfortunately, Whitfield’s recovery did not go as hoped for. He made some improvements but then relapsed and the family realised that this was going to be a life or death battle – a REAL “fight for your life” battle as his character had faced in the arena. He had a young family and I am sure any of you with young families can relate to what this situation must have been like.
Now bear in mind, this was the BIGGEST break of this guys life. Any of you who are or know actors, know how they live their entire lives for this “one shot”.
It was at this time that Whitfield started shooting a documentary called “Be Here Now”, the basis of which reflected the state of mind that he and his family, and many other people with a terminal disease would face. He expressed how important it was to live in the NOW, not in the future because you never know what the future has in store for you – we are all only human…. It is a very moving and emotional documentary that meant so much to him that he got the words “Be Here Now” tattoo’ed on his arm.
In September 2011, Whitfield lost his battle to the disease, being survived by his wife and young children. People who lost a Husband and a Daddy.
I really feel that this is something so relevant to so many of the people that I am walking this line with. So many of us who are working so hard now, and actually LIVING in the future. People reading this who know that their current “reality” is NOT what they want to be known for. People who are building businesses and working toward lifestyles that are FAR outside their current reality.
Now, you reading this, you know how tough it is to LIVE outside your comfort zones and you NEED to have something to BELIEVE in. Some kind of vision. Some desire that you are basing everything on, something that gives you HOPE and tells you that “tomorrow will be better than today” because, I guarantee you, it’s impossible to take on the kind of challenges that a “learning curve” will throw at you if you DON’T have something keeping you going.
This thought has come back to me a few times over the last few months as we have “lost a few people” recently but even more true to life, I had a skype call with my Mom for just over an hour this week. Now admittedly, communicating with home is not something that I do as much as I should but my Mother was so grateful that I spent that much time on a call with her that she actually THANKED me for it…. That made me ask myself, “What kind of life and priorities have I put in the way that stops such a normal thing as spending time with your family, become something deemed as a “special occasion” to them?
Always focused on goals, living in the future, LIVING that vision…… that’s all well and good but lets face it, we don’t know what the future holds, NEVER.
BE…. HERE…..NOW – Look forward to the future – but LIVE TODAY. We have NO idea what tomorrow brings!!
