Educated at University .. Or School of Hard Knocks?
You will have seen a lot in the press over the last few months about students now having to pay more money for their university education and perhaps you were surprised at how passionate people were about this? All the demonstrations and the rest of it..?
I then found myself asking the question:
Does being Educated at University really influence people’s opportunities of future success?
Working in an entrepreneurial environment myself, I am often surprised at how many of my peers have not been educated at university. If we look at some of the most successful people in the business world, these are people who are not traditionally educated via university.
A friend of mine who studied to be a solicitor has recently made partner of a City firm. He earns the usual six figures you would expect but works an average of 14 hours a day. He has a young family and so his time with them is limited due to demands of work. Although he makes a lot of money, he doesn’t feel successful because he is unable to spend more time with his family.
The conclusion I came to is that a university degree may make you more appealing to an employer but is not necessarily going to make you successful.
